Prostate Cancer Treatment
Advances in medical science have opened new avenues for treating prostate cancer. Established methods include Watchful Waiting, Surgery, Radiation Therapy and Hormone Therapy.
Watchful waiting is normally used with older men who are affected by other diseases. The patient’s condition is closely observed without applying treatment until symptoms appear or change.
Surgery is offered for men in good health and includes pelvic lymphadenectomy, radical prostatectomy and transurethral resection of prostate. Radiation therapy is administered by external or internal radiation therapies. It uses high-energy X-rays or other radiation to eliminate cancer cells or prevent them from growing.
Hormone therapy removes hormones or inhibits their action to stop cancer cells growing. Apart from established methods, cryosurgery, chemotherapy, biologic therapy and high intensity focused ultrasound are also available for treating prostate cancer.
