Prostatectomy
Welcome to Prostatectomy.co.uk – a place for general information about Prostatectomy and Prostate Cancer.
Prostate cancer is a very common type of malignancy diagnosed in men in the UK, especially in men over 50.
It isĀ important to keep things in perspective.
Many men who have prostate cancer continue to live long and productive lives and many prostate problems are in fact not cancer.
For example, enlarged prostate is common in men over 45 but it is a benign condition and does not develop into cancer.
When a growth on the prostate becomes malignant then often a surgical procedure – what is called a prostatectomy – is recommended.
What is prostatectomy?
A prostatectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the prostate gland.
Abnormalities of the prostate, such as a tumour, or if the gland itself becomes enlarged for any reason, can restrict the normal flow of urine along the urethra.
There are several different approaches doctors may advice on when a prostatectomy is in order and we discuss these surgical procedures in more detail on out other pages.
